Starting Dec. 16, 2011, I issued a challenge to myself to take and post a photo a day. Beyond that, there are no rules. It can be something I shot for my work at the paper or a client, or it may be a personal photo. But for 366 days - 2012 is a leap year, y'all - I will pick up a camera and take a shot and share it.

  • Aug. 22, 2012 - The idea here was to find a detail shot of my day. I started with first thing in the morning, and the kitchen radio I usually flip on to "Morning Edition" before I make coffee, feed the cats, unload the dishwasher, and other a.m. puttering. (251/366)
  • Aug. 23, 2012 - A snowglobe I gave Kate for one of our anniversaries on a cabinet with a portrait of her parents, who have been married well over 50 years. (252/366)
  • Aug. 21, 2012 - I have actually been wanting to shoot No. 1 son on the trampoline using the high-speed flash sync on my Pocket Wizard Mini-Flex combo. But the late afternoon sun here was hard to resist. I still may go for that other shot before the 366 ends. But given a trampoline shot from a couple years ago is one of my favorite photos, I like that I inadvertently revisited it for No. 250. (250/366)

  • Sept. 21, 2012 - This was a rarity for me: I managed to leave for a family dinner at my cousin's without my DSLR. I think that's because I hid it in my hotel room so well I never saw it or thought about it rushing out the door. So, I used my phone, which, with a top ISO of 800 and a horrendous flash, is not a great low-light camera. But I did manage to document my mom and my aunt's coincidental wardrobe choices. (281/366)

  • Sept. 24, 2012 - So, you're a dad, a dude, trapped in Sally Beauty Supply with your teenage daughter. If you are also a photo phiend and you have a versatile cameraphone ap, it seems like a good time to put it in high-saturation mode and take pictures of nail polish. (284/366)

  • Nov. 14, 2012 - Walking back to my car from the Downtown Arts Center, I took a moment to grab a picture of the Fayette County Courthouse all lit up at night. (334/366)

  • Dec. 16, 2011 - These singers were made by my Great Aunt Mattie and have been a Christmas decoration in my mom's home since I was a kid. On the last day of my Virginia Beach visit, I lined them up with mom's Christmas tree as a backdrop and shot with a 70-200, f2.8 lens to blur the lights as much as possible. The singers were lit with a flash clamped to the top of a chair (I brought limited gear on this trip) triggered with my new Pocket Wizards. (1/366)

  • Dec. 19, 2011 - My original plan was to shoot another instrument in our house, working with the light and curves. Cleaning up for that shot, this one caught my eye because it is a testament to (A) No. 1 Son's work ethic practicing his violin and (B) one of our pet peeves with him: not putting the instrument away - I will generously allow this is in part because he intends to be back soon, but still ... Anyway, I did not disturb the scene much - photojournalist in me kicking in - but I did work with an umbrella as both a reflector and softener at various heights and angles over a few dozen shots.
