Starting Dec. 16, 2011, I issued a challenge to myself to take and post a photo a day. Beyond that, there are no rules. It can be something I shot for my work at the paper or a client, or it may be a personal photo. But for 366 days - 2012 is a leap year, y'all - I will pick up a camera and take a shot and share it.

  • Dec. 22, 2011 - I also solemnly swear that all the shots this month won't involve Christmas lights, though it is the season. The reason for this shot was trying a technique for hand holding the camera at low shutter speeds that I read on Joe McNally's blog. He, like me, was used to holding tight and shooting in burst mode with the expectation of getting some sharp shots among blurs. The suggestion his wife gave him was using mirror lockup mode so that the flip of the mirror did not contribute to camera shake. It seems to have worked out well on this shot, and that is part of the intention of this project: learn new things. (7/366)
  • Dec. 23, 2011 - ... and sometimes you take a photo to make people jealous, like to say, "after I open presents, I'll be enjoying Kate's desserts." This is divinity by Kate and Chris, along with some First Colony tea. I shot this with bounced flash and natural light, and ended up liking the natural better. (8/366)

  • Dec. 25, 2011 - Every year, Pop and Grandma absolutely spoil us and our children at Christmastime. And each year, the most fun of the gift-giving gathering is watching them open their presents. Merry Christmas. (10/366)
  • Dec. 26, 2011 - Late on the afternoon of our trip to Georgia, I noticed this gorgeous late afternoon sun hitting the backs of trees along the Interstate. Stopping so dad could grab a photo would have been a decidedly unpopular decision at that point on the trip. But the day after Christmas I went looking for the light at the farm. I didn't quite find the same glow I saw Saturday, but when I did spot something like it, a handy golf cart let me zip across the field to grab a shot before it disappeared. (11/366)

  • Dec. 17. 2011 - I live in a very treeless section of my neighborhood in Kentucky. That's why going to sleep each night while visiting my mom's home in Virginia Beach I was struck by the silhouettes of trees against the sky outside the picture window. Since she's in the middle of the city, the sky there never gets terribly dark, thus this nighttime sky I tried to document shooting wide open with a really low shutter speed - this is 1/8 sec, I believe - steadying the camera against my body. I did boost the contrast in post a bit. (2/366)
  • Dec. 28, 2011 - On a day trip to North Carolina, a couple pics I wanted to take fell through. But right before I hit the road home, the good Lord presented this beautifully lit Baptist Church. Not quite the golden hour, but close enough, and an unavoidable dumpster made me do a little Photoshop work. (13/366)
  • Dec. 30, 2011 - This is for the people - OK, my mom - who complained there weren't any pictures of me in our Christmas pictures. The picture was actually one of several I took messing around with daylight flash. (14/366)

  • Jan. 1, 2012 - I started the New Year at Church running the soundboard and catching a few shots, particularly for folks who didn't make it out, though I should say it was a really good turnout for New Year's Day morning. My preference would have been to shoot Robin practicing, but during the service was my only option. I found myself waiting for the sun on this windy, partly cloudy day. When sun was blocked, it was prohibitively dark. But when it came out, there was a lovely glow. I like the way the music sort of reflects some white light back on Robin's face. (17/366)
  • Jan. 2, 2012 - So, this photo was initially inspired by pouring cider (kid friendly champagne) New Year's Eve and watching it overflow the glass. The idea was to recreate that, but sometime yesterday, someone drank most of the champagne. So I tried to replicate the effect with beer. But do you know what beer foam looks like? Beer foam. Not champagne (cider). So, change of plans and I got a clear glass attempting to catch the bubbliness of the cider. First attempt produced lotsa bubbles. Also fingerprints on the glass. Second attempt, with a clean glass, I discovered that cider loses its bubbliness with every repouring. So, in Photoshop, we accentuate the shape with a little black and white. Ah, learning is part of the intent of this project. (18/366)
  • Jan. 3, 2012 - Funny story about this one: I took several dozen shots of this, moving lights around to develop the smoothest, least shadowy look I could. Then, when I put them on the computer, this textured, deeply shadowed version from early in the session was the one I liked the most. Go figure. (19/366)

  • Jan. 6, 2012 - Here was my photographic lesson today: you cannot get cats to pose. I will pause a moment while all my fellow cat owners shout, "Duh!" Working at home this afternoon, I noticed the cats relaxing in the sunbeam coming through the front door and tried to go over and shoot closeups of them in repose. But they wanted scratching. And they didn't want to sit down again. So, while I did get some friskier shots of them up close, this was the closest to my theme - a long shot, when she didn't know she was posing. (22/366)
