Starting Dec. 16, 2011, I issued a challenge to myself to take and post a photo a day. Beyond that, there are no rules. It can be something I shot for my work at the paper or a client, or it may be a personal photo. But for 366 days - 2012 is a leap year, y'all - I will pick up a camera and take a shot and share it.

  • Jan. 8, 2012 - Maxwell Street Presbyterian Church associate pastor Kyle H. Brown and pastor Woody Berry show off a week's worth of whiskers in the Beards for Buds challenge between members of Maxwell and Pisgah Presbyterian. The seven-week challenge from New Year's Day to Fat Tuesday is to raise funds for the American Cancer Society ear-marked specifically for men’s research/support. (24/366)

  • Jan. 10, 2012 - This kind of took me back to college days when Dave, a fellow photographer, and I would go into downtown Norfolk and shoot long exposure lights. I decided to give it a shot again while Chris was in CKYO rehearsal tonight, taking pics in a few spots around the Main Street and Broadway area, including this one from the pedway between Victorian Square and Triangle Center. Nice to try this again, and I'm sure I'll do more. I have 340 shots to go. (26/366)
  • Jan. 11, 2012 - Driving in to work today I heard a report from the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas on Morning Edition. Commentator John Moe said it was an overall disappointing year, and the product he picked as sure to fail was a piece of photo gear: a stick. "It's a metal rod that you're supposed to put a camera on the end of and then you hit the timer and take a picture of yourself," Moe said. "It was described this way." I thought, hey, I've seen these things. In fact, at that moment, I had one in my trunk. A monopod (they've been around a while). With a camera mounted on the end. A camera with a timer, which most digital cameras have. But I had never used my monopod that way. So, I came home and tried it, and now I feel so up to date, even though I still don't have an HD TV.   • Jan. 15, 2012 - The service of ordination and installation for new elders and deacons is always a moving day at Maxwell Presbyterian. The challenge is to capture the moment without intruding on it, so this was one of the few shots I took during the actual laying on of hands. (31/366)
  • Jan. 16, 2012 - One thing this project is teaching me is to wake up with a camera and shoes ready, because you don't know what the sunrise may offer. Today, more than the clouds, it was golden illumination before a rather rainy, dreary day. (32/366)

  • Jan. 23, 2012 - Drawing some inspiration from lifestyle photographer Nick Fancher, I tried to play with some of his pointers in a video tutorial on daytime lighting with some Chucks. (OK, truth be told, I felt like I was being a bit unfaithful to my Chucks after shooting another pair of shoes for photo 35. I might have experimented more, but the moment I stepped outside I was reminded it was a wind advisory day, and after a few dozen frames, I didn't want to press my luck with my flash gear. (39/366)
  • Jan. 24, 2012 - Watching Agape Theatre's production of "A Song for Coretta," I was inspired by the idea of the ladies waiting to pay their respects to Coretta Scott King gathering under an umbrella together. One slight disappointment was we had set this shoot for right around twilight, but sunset got a little too far along by the time we got the shot we wanted, so I didn't get the skies I wanted in the shot.   • Jan. 27, 2012 - After a busy week of shots for work, I finally had to come up with something today. I decided to get my green guitar together with my 250W Utiltech work light I bought for like $12 at Lowe's after reading several people recommending utility lights as alternate lighting, particularly with still objects. Overall, I liked it and I want to play with it more - take that hundreds of dollars of SBs and Pocket Wizards. (43/366)
  • Jan. 28, 2012 - This one actually started on a rare experience as a passenger in the car. Riding home at sunset, I noticed the spectacular skies. I took out my phone and started snapping some pics, but between the low shutter speeds I'm sure the cameraphone was giving me and the car motion, all of those shots are a bit blurry - though it is a kind of cool Blair Witchy camera-motion effect. Maybe at Halloween. But when I got home, I grabbed one of my cameras with an f1.8 lens to capture this shot of the stark, leafless tree against the twilight. (44/366)
  • Jan. 31, 2012 - I had an assignment at the Capitol today and left myself a little time to take some pictures on the way out. Unfortunately, it was a lousy time of day to shoot the Capitol as the sun was on the back of the building and creating killer lens flare on any wide shots. But glancing up at one point, I saw these branches sort of framing the flags atop the building. (47/366)
  • Feb. 1, 2012 - "Sympathy" by Chicago-based band Scattered Trees is the first release by Lexington-based Soul Step Records, a company that exclusively releases vinyl records. I'm working on a story about the label for the paper and decided to play around with the record a bit tonight. (48/366)
  • Feb. 2, 2012 - For the first time in this project, here at shot 49, I can honestly say this did not turn out anything like I'd planned. I've been sick for a couple days, even stayed home from the office today. I wanted to do a clothing shot of this nice, big gray sweater that's been keeping me cozy all day. Then I thought I'd contrast it with a sort of bleak outdoor look for the winter cold feel. But by the time I got set up. I was really racing the sunset and just didn't quite get it the way I wanted it before the light was gone. So, I played with this shot in Photoshop for a while trying to get to a different kind of wintry, coldy feel. If I ever make a mopey album, maybe I can use this as the back cover. (49/366)
